Speaking of the past, I’d like to talk about my current appreciation for gold moon watches. If we go back a few months to our Speedmaster World Cup, it is disappointing that none of the coveted gold limited edition Speedmaster watches made it past the group stage. The Moonlight Gold Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Edition, the brilliant Apollo XI 345.0802, and even the grandfather of all limited editions, the Apollo XI BA145.022-69 failed to top their groups. While this seems to be the case from the analysis, I’m sure it’s not. Overrated modern watches and their replacements
However, the $40,000 price tag on the secondary market got me thinking about pigs and hogs. You may remember that I really enjoyed using one of these popular modern watches as an out of breath during the Superbowl World Cup. To be honest, if this thing was made of precious metal, it would start to make a lot more sense. If it had an upgraded movement, maybe I would start to understand it. But as it stands, this “limited edition” of only 1970 pieces feels wrong, and that’s before I start telling cartoon jokes.
Or you can buy: To be honest, you can buy a lot of things for $40k – including a rather nice late-model 911. If you want to stay in the watch realm, get the latest 3861 Moonwatch. Heck, you can buy both the Hesalite and Sapphire sandwich versions and still have plenty of cash. Buy a different Porsche and use that Speedy to time yourself on Starbucks runs every morning!” . In fact, what I wanted to do (and I did) was to buy the 50th Anniversary Speedy in Moonlight Gold. When all else falls down, you’re left with a gorgeous watch that’s made of something of tangible value. Here’s the crazy part: in today’s market, you still have enough left over to buy a new steel Moonwatch.
If I thought the $35,000 list price of the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711 was a bit ridiculous, I find its $90,000+ price tag downright outrageous. As attractive and well made as this watch is, it is a steel watch with an automatic movement. The Nautilus is one of those popular modern watches that ticks a lot of the right boxes. It was designed by Gerald Genta, which is a huge box for collectors. Then, add the Patek Philippe name to it and you have a perfect recipe for madness. As I said, I love the Nautilus, but the market feels completely overheated.
Or you can buy it: If you really want to spend six figures on a new solid time steel luxury replica watches, I think I will have a hard time convincing you. However, there are a lot of great watches out there now that have integrated bracelets, or models that appear to have them. I can make it really easy for you too. Just go ahead and get the Moser Streamliner because it is so beautiful. Or, because some call it the new icon, consider the Bulgari Octo Finissimo. For the latter, you can strut around and get one – no need to beg, plead, complain or cry.
If you own one of these popular modern watches that I picked, congratulations! If you bought it at retail and didn’t have to buy a bunch of other stuff to sweeten the deal, then double (or in the case of the Patek Philippe, double) your pat on the back. Seriously, these are great watches, and if a Rolex, Omega or Patek make you happy, that’s great. However, if you’re angry at the world because you missed out on one of these when you were selling them, you’re lucky. The moral of the story is that there are tons of other watches to choose from, most of which can even save you tons of money. Enjoy the search! In the end, don’t be afraid to be different because all good things come to an end someday.
